Sri Lanka SOLO Travel Blog One
Hey guys! It's a slightly late post this week because I'm in Sri Lanka and have lacked wifi etc! I'm currently sat in the balcony of my treehouse situated in the jungle of Sigirriya, Sri Lanka. My trip so far has been incredible. I spent a night in Negombo, close to the airport, and then the next morning took the local bus for about 4-5hours (changing bus) to Kalpytia. At first, I felt secluded and uneasy traveling alone as a woman. I quickly fell in love with the place, made friends with a Swedish man in the neighboring villa, got quickly attached to the young boy who was the owner of the villas son and had an amazing time. The Swedish man had hired a scooter in which we rode to Dutch beach with after a relaxing (and also exhausting morning because my bag pack broke but cut a long story short I got a new one with the help of a Tuk tuck driver driving me around kalpitiya) morning.
That evening we also made friends with a lovely Russian couple who were amazing enough to prepare the most delicious meal of huge, juicy and fresh prawns. We had an amazing evening of laughter, good food, some beer and amazing company. This is what I love about travel. The culture you experience. The amazing people you meet, local and fellow travelers. The memories you create. It was so amazing to be in such calming, quiet and relaxing nature.
So anyway, after two lovely nights there I headed to Anuradhapura. This was a historical place with lots of ancient ruins. I arrived in the afternoon and immediately met some lovely German girls. We had lunch together and then headed in a tuck tuk to Mihintale Mountain. It was amazing and we enjoyed a beautiful sunset up high overlooking the city. The next day was the day to take the tuk tuk round and explore the two thousand year old ancient ruins. It was truly amazing to explore and so natural. So far my impressions of Sri Lanka is that it has so much nature. I've seen all sorts of animals, birds and nature. Truly wonderful.
Later that day, I headed to the place I am at now. I took a bus to Dambulla and then arrived to Sigirriya. Another challenge I faced was that I booked a hotel named sigiriya hostel which is in fact 20km away from sigiriya. Luckily, I had a lovely tuk tuk driver who helped me to this treehouse location I am at now. I am currently quite literally surrounded by lizards and Geko'S and all sorts of jungle sounds. It's refreshing. It's spooky at night because I'm worried a lizard will get in. But with the clothes moat I made around my mosquito net he is definitely not getting in!
Today, a new German guy friend and I headed to the Lions Peak. It was such an exhilarating morning of climbing and seeing phenomenal views. It was once a monastery and also royal palace, and contained amazing scriptures and erotic drawings of the women who stayed with the king in the palace over a thousand years ago.
After exploring here we had a fruit stop where we endured the juicy fresh watermelon, papaya and mango. We then rented the bicycle and rode around the jungle. This was scary as wild dogs sometimes barked at us but I stayed calm and took on the challenge and overcame my fear. I am already learning so much from travelling, have met amazing people and experience so much! Going to go have home-cooked,Sri Lankan dinner now! Tomorrow I will head to Kandy!
I'll be in touch,
Sabrina
