Shanghai city life, a trip to Wuxi, lots of presentations & Chinese study!

Wuxi  So I'm currently on my flight to TAKAMATSU, JAPAN BBY! It's Qingming Festival on Tuesday. This is the festival of remembering past ancestors whereby many mainland Chinese people eat green dumplings and burn joss paper for deceased. Meanwhile, for us expat foreigners we fortunately get days off to travel or do whatever! Most of us get Sunday, Monday, Tuesday off for this Chinese festival but luckily for me I don't work on Fridays and my school have let me have Saturday off. So I'm very lucky to be having a full 5 day trip in Japan; I'll be visiting Takamatsu for three days and Tokyo for two days. I'm so excited. I went to Japan this time last year too, it was incredible especially due to the beautiful cherry blossoms. In fact I'll be staying, in Tokyo, with a friend I made via the airbnb I stayed in in Tokyo last year. Small world! Anyway, let me tell you about the last week or so in Shanghai. Last week I had a productive and...

St. Paddy's & a super productive week!

Hey! Wow, my head is absolutely banging right now having just done two hours solid of Chinese study! It’s a good feeling though. But I thought it would be a good time, now 9pm on my Sunday evening, to write my weekly blog. So, as Holi ended St. Patrick’s Day arrived! I had a fun week of teaching St. Patrick’s Day to all my classes but Grade one; who to be frank wouldn’t have a clue what I’m talking about if I wacked a leprechaun and four leaf clover on the screen. Nevertheless, I had a fun review lesson with my grade ones and awesome St. Paddy’s lessons with the rest! The week absolutely flew by and I enjoyed my teaching even more; because the content and lesson was fun! If you spend time making the lesson fun, you actually find you enjoy teaching it so much more. That’s how I felt anyway. This has definitely been a very productive week and weekend for me. I decided to, due to my still not completely healed ankle, take it easy and rest. This worked well with the fact that...

Holi fun!

Hey guys! So last week was a colourful, vibrant and cultural week! I had lots of fun teaching the festival Holi during my English Corner classes. I know they don't completely understand the festival, it's impossible to teach English as a language and also expect them to completely understand the nature of the content. But I know that I thoroughly enjoyed trying my best. In my head I wanted them to understand that good always prevails evil; basically be good and good things will happen to you. I also wanted them to all leave in happiness with a smile on their face. The second one I definitely achieved.  It's the best feeling engaging the class out here in China. Because in that moment, they not only understand what you are saying in a foreign language (English) but they also understand the meaning of what you are saying; which is a great feeling! It warms my heart when that happens. Now don't get me wrong, it's not all happiness and sunshine. There a...
